MOEX Russia Finishes Flat Amid Heavy Selling in Banking, Energy Sectors

Summary
Russia's main stock index closed unchanged on Sunday, masking a sharp sell-off in major financial and energy firms like VTB and Transneft that sent them to new lows. Gains in other sectors led to a mixed and volatile session.
The MOEX Russia Index finished Sunday's trading session unchanged, a flat close that belied significant turmoil in key sectors where major banking and energy stocks plummeted by double digits. Despite the benchmark index's lack of movement, the session saw the index touch a new three-year low, according to data from Investing.com.
Banking and Energy Stocks Tumble
A sharp sell-off was concentrated in Russia's financial and energy giants, with several prominent names hitting historic lows. The session's worst performers experienced substantial declines, weighing heavily on the broader market sentiment.
Key decliners included:
- Transneft PJSC Pref (TRNF_p): Tumbled 14.98% to hit a 52-week low.
- Bank VTB PJSC (VTBR): Plunged 14.09% to reach an all-time low.
- Sberbank Rossii PJSC Pref (SBER_p): Dropped 10.96%, also closing at a 52-week low.
Pockets of Strength Amid Volatility
In a highly divergent session, the steep losses in certain sectors were offset by gains elsewhere. Market breadth was surprisingly positive, with rising stocks outnumbering declining ones on the Moscow Stock Exchange by 199 to 39, while 8 ended unchanged.
AdLeading the gainers were utilities and materials companies:
- ROSSETI PJSC (FEES): Advanced 3.10%.
- Polyus PJSC (PLZL): Gained 3.10%.
- AFK Sistema PJSC (AFKS): Rose 3.01%.
Market Backdrop: Volatility and Commodities
The mixed performance occurred as a key gauge of market anxiety remained elevated. The Russian Volatility Index (RVI), which measures the implied volatility of MOEX options, closed unchanged at 53.02, a level that represents a new 52-week high.
In commodities, energy prices provided a supportive backdrop, with the September Brent oil contract rising 4.59% to $88.10 a barrel. In currency markets, the ruble saw modest declines against major currencies, with the USD/RUB pair up 0.13% to 78.20.
