Background

Mexico's benchmark S&P/BMV IPC index closed down 0.87% on Friday, as declines across the industrial, consumer goods, and services sectors weighed on the broader market. The session ended with a clear majority of listed stocks posting losses, according to closing data from the Mexican Stock Exchange.

Sector and Stock Performance

The day's downturn was led by significant laggards in key industries. Among the index's worst performers was mining conglomerate Penoles (BMV:PEOLES), which saw its shares fall 3.57%.

Other notable decliners included:

  • Sigma Foods (BMV:SIGMAFA), which dropped 3.49%.
  • Grupo Carso (BMV:GCARSOA1), a diversified conglomerate, which shed 2.96%.

Despite the negative sentiment, a few companies bucked the trend. The top performer on the index was Bolsa Mexicana de Valores (BMV:BOLSAA), the stock exchange operator itself, which climbed 3.03%. Airline Controladora Vuela (BMV:VOLARA) also rose 2.29%, and cement producer Cemex (BMV:CEMEXCPO) gained 1.03%.

Market Breadth and Broader Indicators

Market breadth figures underscored the widespread selling pressure, with 151 stocks declining compared to only 71 advancers. An additional 15 stocks finished the session unchanged.

In currency markets, the Mexican Peso showed resilience against the U.S. dollar. The USD/MXN pair edged down 0.10% to 16.89. Meanwhile, commodity markets were mixed, with December gold futures falling 1.38% while November Brent crude oil futures posted a modest gain of 0.35%.
