Meta Stock Rises Against Tech Selloff on Goldman Sachs Note, 'Muse' AI Optimism

Meta Platforms (META) stock gained 0.9% in pre-open trading, demonstrating notable resilience as the broader technology sector faced significant selling pressure. The advance was fueled by a positive analyst note from Goldman Sachs and sustained investor enthusiasm for the company's recently launched artificial intelligence platform, Muse.
Analyst Conviction Grows
Goldman Sachs reiterated its Buy rating and $725 price target on Meta's stock, stating it holds its positive view with "greater conviction." The investment bank cited the successful launch of Muse, Meta's first major paid consumer AI service, and the resolution of a significant legal issue as key factors behind its strengthened outlook.
This endorsement follows other recent bullish calls from Wall Street, including an upgrade to Overweight by JPMorgan and a price target increase to $650 from $595 by Wedbush. The wave of analyst support centers on the potential of Meta's new "agentic AI" strategy, which aims to create autonomous AI agents that can perform tasks for users.
The 'Muse' AI Platform
Launched on September 8, Muse represents a strategic move into a new consumer revenue stream for Meta. The platform is designed to go beyond simple chatbots to perform actions on a user's behalf, such as browsing the web, managing schedules, and completing purchases. The service is offered in several tiers, with a premium plan priced at $100 per month.
AdDefying Broader Market Headwinds
Meta's pre-market gain is particularly noteworthy given the negative sentiment dominating the market. The tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 1.7%, while the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.7% and 0.3%, respectively.
The widespread selloff is being driven by two main forces:
- AI Sector Concerns: Comments from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei calling for a slowdown in frontier AI model development on safety grounds, a view echoed by other industry leaders, have rattled investor confidence in AI-related stocks.
- Inflation and Fed Policy: Hotter-than-expected August inflation data has pushed market-implied odds of a Federal Reserve rate hike this week to between 87% and 89%, pressuring growth-oriented technology stocks.
Meta's ability to trade higher underscores how company-specific catalysts, namely the promising AI monetization strategy and strong analyst backing, are currently offsetting the challenging macroeconomic environment for the social media giant.
