Summary
Mattel announced that CEO Ynon Kreiz will step down, to be succeeded by board member and Condé Nast CEO Roger Lynch. The toy manufacturer's shares fell 3% in premarket trading on the news of the leadership change.
Mattel Inc. (NASDAQ:MAT) shares fell 3% in premarket trading on Wednesday after the company announced a leadership transition. Chief Executive Officer Ynon Kreiz is stepping down to accept a senior role at another public company, with the toy maker's board appointing veteran director Roger Lynch as his successor.
The CEO Transition
Roger Lynch, who currently serves as the CEO of global media company Condé Nast, will take over as Chairman and CEO of Mattel. According to the company, Lynch will assume the Chairman role on October 2, 2026, and take full executive leadership as CEO on or before November 2, 2026. Lynch has been a member of Mattel's board and its Independent Lead Director.
The appointment follows a comprehensive succession plan. In conjunction with the move, current director Diana Ferguson has been named the new Independent Lead Director.
Kreiz's Legacy and Market Reaction
The unexpected departure of Kreiz, who led the company for eight years, prompted immediate selling pressure from investors. During his tenure, Kreiz oversaw a significant turnaround, transforming Mattel from a traditional toy manufacturer into an entertainment company driven by its intellectual property.
Key achievements under Kreiz's leadership include:
Ad- Strengthening Mattel's core toy brands.
- Regaining key licenses, including Disney Princess.
- Producing the 2023 blockbuster *Barbie* film, which achieved historic global box office results.
Despite the market's initial reaction to the leadership uncertainty, Mattel noted it enters this transition with a significantly strengthened balance sheet and an investment-grade credit profile.
A New Chapter for Mattel
Lynch brings extensive experience from the media, technology, and consumer brand sectors, having previously served as CEO of Pandora and the founding CEO of Sling TV. His background in digital monetization and IP expansion aligns with Mattel's current strategic focus.
Investors will be closely watching Lynch's execution as he steers the company's next phase. This includes scaling its digital gaming ecosystem, which includes the mobile developer Mattel163, and expanding its slate of film and television projects while maintaining the health of its traditional retail business.
