Major Currency Pairs Face Billions in Options Expiries This Wednesday

Several major currency pairs are facing the expiration of options contracts worth billions of dollars this Wednesday, a development that could lead to increased activity and potential price gravitation around key levels. Data from the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) outlines significant notional values at various strike prices across the foreign exchange market.
Key Expiries in Focus
The most significant expiries are concentrated in the EUR/USD and USD/JPY pairs, with traders closely watching several key levels. Other major pairs, including GBP/USD and USD/CAD, also have substantial contracts maturing.
- EUR/USD: The largest concentration includes €1.88 billion at the 1.1400 strike, followed by €1.33 billion at 1.1500 and €960 million at 1.1750.
- USD/JPY: Expiries include $1.12 billion at 164.50, $1.05 billion at 160.00, and $949.6 million at 163.50.
- GBP/USD: A notable expiry of £1.37 billion is set at the 1.3350 strike price.
- USD/CAD: Matures include $731.4 million at 1.4250 and $594.3 million at 1.4100.
Market Implications
Large option expiries can exert a “pinning” effect on the spot market, where the price of a currency pair may be drawn toward a strike price with a high concentration of open interest as the expiration time approaches. This phenomenon is often driven by dealers hedging their exposure to these options, which can temporarily suppress volatility.
AdOnce the options expire, this gravitational pull is removed, which can sometimes lead to a release of pent-up price movement and a return of volatility. Investors monitor these events to understand potential short-term choke points and support or resistance levels in the currency markets.
Looking Ahead
Wednesday's activity is followed by another set of significant expiries later in the week and into the next. On July 10, the EUR/USD has a €1.63 billion expiry at 1.1300. More notably, a very large USD/JPY contract worth $3.42 billion is scheduled to expire at the 160.50 strike on July 13.
Other currency pairs with expiries on Wednesday include AUD/USD, USD/CNY, USD/BRL, and NZD/USD, among others, according to the DTCC data.
