Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd Shares Rise on Expanded Suez Canal Services

Shares in A.P. Moller-Maersk (CSE:MAERSKb) and Hapag-Lloyd (ETR:HLAG) gained on Monday after the shipping companies announced they will resume four additional container services through the Suez Canal. The move signals growing operational confidence in the vital Asia-Europe trade corridor, which has been largely avoided by carriers due to regional security risks.
Service Resumption Details
The two shipping groups will transition their AE5, AE11, AE12, and ME2 services from the lengthy route around Africa's Cape of Good Hope back to the more direct trans-Suez passage, according to the announcement. These services are critical links in the trade network connecting Asia, the Mediterranean, and Europe.
By returning to the Suez Canal, the carriers can significantly reduce transit times and fuel costs compared to the alternative journey. The decision marks a further step in normalizing operations along one of the world's most important maritime chokepoints.
Market Reaction
Investors reacted positively to the development, which points to improved operational efficiency and potentially lower costs for the carriers. In Monday's trading session:
Ad- Maersk's B shares rose by 4%.
- Hapag-Lloyd shares gained 2.3%.
The market's response reflects the financial benefits of using the shorter waterway, which can directly impact a shipping line's profitability through reduced fuel consumption and faster vessel turnaround.
A Gradual Return to the Red Sea
Most major container lines rerouted their fleets away from the Red Sea and Suez Canal earlier this decade following attacks on commercial vessels by Yemen’s Houthi militants. This forced a costly and disruptive shift to the Cape of Good Hope route.
Monday's announcement is not the first of its kind. The companies had previously disclosed the resumption of some services in early July and August. This latest expansion indicates a continued, phased return as shipping companies assess the evolving security conditions in the region.
