London Stock Exchange Plans Overnight Trading Venue for 2027 Launch

Summary
The London Stock Exchange Group plans to introduce a separate, overnight trading venue in the first half of 2027, aiming to capture growing demand from global retail investors and compete with 24-hour markets.
London Stock Exchange Group PLC (LSEG) intends to launch a separate trading venue for overnight sessions in the first half of 2027, a move designed to meet rising demand from global investors and counter competition from 24/7 digital asset platforms. The plans were detailed by LSE executives in interviews with the Financial Times on Tuesday.
A New Market for a New Era
The proposed venue will operate independently from the LSE's main exchange. It is scheduled to run from 5:00 p.m. to 7:50 a.m. London time, effectively bridging the gap between the close and open of the primary market, which will maintain its standard 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. hours.
Initially, the platform will focus on trading exchange-traded products (ETPs) rather than individual stocks. Simon McQuoid-Mason, the exchange's head of new product and market structure, told the newspaper this approach presents fewer regulatory and operational complexities. The plan is to begin with more than 2,600 listed ETPs.
Strategic Rationale and Competition
LSE Chief Executive Julia Hoggett told the Financial Times the initiative is a direct response to growing demand from retail investors, particularly those in Asia. These investors increasingly expect the ability to trade outside traditional hours and use London's time zone to access both UK and global assets.
AdThe move comes as traditional exchanges worldwide face pressure to extend their hours. Exchanges like Nasdaq, the New York Stock Exchange, and Cboe Global Markets are also exploring or implementing longer trading sessions, while cryptocurrency platforms such as Coinbase already offer continuous trading, intensifying the competition for retail order flow.
Bolstering London's Competitiveness
This development is part of a broader effort to enhance the appeal and competitiveness of London's capital markets. The city has experienced a slowdown in initial public offerings (IPOs) and has seen several high-profile companies opt to list on other exchanges.
In a forward-looking detail, the exchange is also designing the new platform to support emerging trading tools driven by agentic artificial intelligence, according to the Financial Times report.
