LME Copper Hits Record High Above $14,530 on Tight Supply and Tariff Speculation

London Metal Exchange (LME) copper futures surged to a record high on the evening of September 7, breaking past the $14,530 per ton mark and surpassing the previous peak set in January. The rally has lifted copper prices by 17% year-to-date and 47% over the past 12 months, boosting the shares of major producers.
Market Reaction
In response to the record-setting price, copper-related stocks opened higher in Hong Kong on September 8. Key movers included:
- Jiangxi Copper Co. (00358): rose 3.11% to HK$37.74
- MMG Ltd. (01208): gained 2.58% to HK$9.36
- China Nonferrous Mining Corp. (01258): climbed 2.49% to HK$16.85
- China Molybdenum Co. (03993): increased 2.02% to HK$16.70
Supply Constraints and Tariff Fears
AdThe price surge is being driven by a combination of tightening supply-demand fundamentals and market speculation. A key factor is the disruption in Chile, the world's largest copper producer. According to data from Chile's central bank, the country's copper exports in August fell to their lowest level in more than a year at $4.62 billion, a 14% decrease from July and a 3.2% drop year-over-year. The decline was attributed to severe winter storms and other mine production issues.
Adding to supply concerns, traders are reportedly shipping large volumes of copper to the United States to capitalize on higher domestic prices, amid market bets that the U.S. may impose tariffs on refined copper. This potential for arbitrage is further tightening availability in other regions.
Outlook
Analysts at ANZ Group noted that the combination of U.S. tariff concerns, ongoing mine supply challenges, and resilient global demand could continue to support prices. The bank suggested that these factors could propel copper to new record highs early next year, indicating that the current rally may have further to run.
