Background

Shares of Lam Research (LRCX) rose sharply in morning trading Wednesday, outperforming a flat broader market after a key customer's blockbuster earnings report and a bullish analyst note bolstered confidence in the semiconductor equipment sector.

SK Hynix Results Boost Sector Confidence

The primary catalyst for the rally was a record-breaking third-quarter 2026 earnings report from South Korean memory chip giant SK Hynix, a major customer of Lam Research. According to a report from Investing.com, SK Hynix announced that its supply of high-demand DRAM and High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) is effectively sold out through 2029.

This powerful long-term forecast signals that the demand for AI-related hardware remains robust, directly benefiting equipment suppliers like Lam Research that provide the critical wafer fabrication tools needed for production. SK Hynix also reported its first-ever quarterly revenue surpassing KRW 100 trillion, further underscoring the strength of the memory market.

Analyst Sees Buying Opportunity

Adding to the positive sentiment, Lynx Equity Strategies reiterated its $400 price target on Lam Research stock. In a note cited by Investing.com, analyst KC Rajkumar argued that a sharp sell-off in the prior week, which followed a rare earnings miss from Lam, was "overdone."

Rajkumar stated that results from SK Hynix and other supply-chain partners indicate Lam’s underlying business strength "continues unabated." The analyst expects long-term investors to view the recent dip as a buying opportunity, potentially encouraged by expectations of aggressive share buybacks hinted at during Lam's October 21 earnings call.

Market Reaction

Lam Research stock was up 3.4% in morning trading, a significant move given the S&P 500 was up just 0.1% and the Nasdaq was nearly flat. This outperformance highlights that the rally was driven by company- and sector-specific news rather than broader market momentum.

Despite the day's gains, the stock remains well below its 52-week high of $438.50, according to the report. The combination of strong forward-looking demand from a key customer and the supportive analyst commentary helped lift shares from what some investors considered discounted levels.
