Lam Research Stock Jumps Amid Broad Semiconductor Sector Rebound

Background

Lam Research Corp. (LRCX) shares jumped 7.8% in pre-open trading, leading a sharp rebound across the semiconductor industry as investors returned to artificial intelligence hardware stocks after two sessions of steep declines.

Sector Rebounds on Fading Selling Pressure

The rally marks a reversal from a recent downturn where profit-taking swept through the chip sector. The immediate catalyst for Tuesday's recovery appears to be the fading of "sell-the-news" pressure that followed Samsung Electronics' preliminary report of a record second-quarter operating profit. While the result beat estimates, it initially prompted investors to lock in recent gains.

With that selling wave subsiding, dip-buyers have re-entered the market. The positive sentiment was further supported by comments from the CEO of rival Applied Materials, who reportedly spoke of a multi-year boom for the chip industry, according to Investing.com.

Signs of Strong AI Demand

Underlying investor confidence in the sector's long-term prospects remains strong, particularly regarding AI-related demand. A key indicator is the upcoming Nasdaq ADR debut for SK Hynix, which was reportedly more than seven times oversubscribed. This signals significant institutional appetite for exposure to the AI memory market.

This combination of oversold technical conditions and clear evidence of sustained investor demand created a strong foundation for the pre-market recovery. Despite the surge, Lam Research stock remains below its 52-week high of $438.50.

Analysts Reaffirm Bullish Stance

Recent analyst actions have provided a valuation anchor for the stock, reinforcing the bullish outlook. On Tuesday, several firms raised their price targets on Lam Research:

  • TD Cowen raised its price target to $400.
  • Mizuho also lifted its target to $400.

These upgrades follow other recent positive revisions that supported the stock during its recent selloff, including Morgan Stanley raising its target to $404 on July 6 and Susquehanna increasing its target to $475 in late June.
