Kyrgyzstan's Central Bank Partners With CertiK to Secure Digital Som CBDC

Summary
The National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with blockchain security firm CertiK to collaborate on the security of its central bank digital currency and enhance digital asset oversight.
The National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic (NBKR) has entered a long-term strategic partnership with blockchain security firm CertiK to bolster the security of its planned Digital Som central bank digital currency (CBDC). The collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), also aims to enhance the country's overall framework for digital asset oversight.
Scope of the Agreement
The MoU, signed in Bishkek on September 15, establishes a formal framework for cooperation between Kyrgyzstan's central bank and the Web3 security specialist. According to the announcement, the partnership will focus on exchanging expertise and providing technical support across several critical areas.
Key areas of intended cooperation include:
- Technical Security: Blockchain and digital asset security assessments, formal verification, and cybersecurity.
- Regulatory Advisory: Guidance on Anti-Money Laundering/Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) rules, digital asset custody, and licensing requirements.
- Risk Monitoring: Exploring the deployment of CertiK’s supervision and compliance solutions for ongoing regulatory oversight.
"We see particular value in exchanging experience and expertise in blockchain and digital asset security, cybersecurity, AML/CFT, and the analysis and monitoring of digital asset transactions,” said Sanzhar Abdygaziev, a member of the NBKR Management Board.
Integrating Security into Digital Finance
AdThis partnership signifies a proactive approach by the NBKR to integrate robust security and risk management protocols into its nascent digital financial infrastructure. The collaboration aims to address potential vulnerabilities before the widespread rollout of the Digital Som, embedding security into the system's core design.
"Digital asset infrastructure requires security and risk management to be considered from the earliest stages of design through ongoing operation," stated Ronghui Gu, Co-Founder and CEO of CertiK. He added that the firm will support the "secure development of the country’s digital asset ecosystem."
Context and Market Implications
The agreement comes as the NBKR continues to advance its Digital Som initiative, which is intended to modernize the national payment system and improve financial inclusion. For investors and market participants, a central bank formally partnering with a major Web3 security firm signals a growing institutional acceptance of blockchain technology and a commitment to creating a regulated, secure environment for digital assets.
This collaboration could serve as a model for other central banks exploring CBDCs. CertiK has previously provided technical advisory support to regulators in the United States and responded to consultations from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), highlighting a global trend of public-private partnerships in shaping digital asset policy.
