KPMG Australia Taps Insider John Sams as CEO to Steer Firm Past Audit Scandal

KPMG Australia has named partner John Sams as its new chief executive, a move aimed at stabilizing the firm as it works to recover from a damaging audit leak scandal that prompted a leadership overhaul. The appointment is effective immediately, the company announced on Tuesday.
A Mandate for Change
Sams, a partner from the commercial advisory and transactions practice, is an internal appointee who has served as the firm's chief financial officer since October 2025 and its chief operating officer since June. According to KPMG, his selection followed a rigorous process that evaluated both internal and external candidates from its global network.
In a statement, independent chairman Michael Ebeid said the board believes Sams possesses the necessary attributes for the role, including "agility, courage and integrity." The board has given Sams a clear mandate to strengthen the firm's culture and rebuild confidence with employees, clients, and regulators.
Rebuilding After Scandal
The appointment comes two months after KPMG's former CEO departed amid intense scrutiny from the Australian government and major clients. The crisis began in March following whistleblower accusations that staff had improperly used inside information to secure lucrative audit contracts.
AdThe scandal led to a significant leadership shake-up, resulting in the departure of the former CEO, audit head, chairman, and several senior partners implicated in the matter. Sams takes over from interim leader Stan Stavros, who stepped in to guide the firm through the initial turmoil.
The Path Forward
In accepting the role, Sams acknowledged the challenges ahead and committed to guiding the firm toward recovery. "I do not underestimate the task ahead but commit to our clients and people that I am prepared to be courageous, take the tough decisions and lead the changes we need to set us on the right path," Sams said.
His leadership will be critical as the Big Four accounting firm seeks to restore its reputation and assure stakeholders of its commitment to ethical governance and operational integrity.
