Kinetik Holdings Stock Surges After Hours on Report of Potential Sale
Text size
Background

Kinetik Holdings Inc. (KNTK) shares surged more than 5% in after-hours trading after a report emerged that the midstream energy company is exploring strategic alternatives, including a possible sale.

Potential Sale Explored

According to a report by Bloomberg, the Blackstone-backed pipeline operator is working with financial advisers to prepare a formal process that could be launched within weeks. The report, citing people with knowledge of the matter, cautioned that no final decision has been made and Kinetik could ultimately opt to remain independent.

Representatives for both Kinetik and Blackstone declined to comment on the matter, according to the report. This development follows a previous approach earlier in 2026 from rival Western Midstream Partners, which prompted Kinetik to begin assessing buyer interest at that time.

Strong Fundamentals and Assets

The potential for a sale comes as Kinetik demonstrates strong operational and financial performance, making it an attractive target for consolidation in the energy sector. The company's assets include a roughly 4,600-mile pipeline network that transports natural gas and other products from the prolific Permian Basin to the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Kinetik recently posted record results for the second quarter of 2026, which included:

  • A 36% year-over-year increase in revenue.
  • Net income that more than doubled compared to the prior year.

Following the strong quarter, management raised its full-year guidance for 2026, signaling confidence in its continued business momentum.

Market Reaction

The after-hours stock jump to $57.41 stood in sharp contrast to the broader market's performance during the regular session. Major U.S. indices, including the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average, fell amid renewed inflation fears as Brent crude oil surpassed $100 per barrel and Treasury yields climbed.

While most sectors declined, energy stocks were a bright spot during the day. The combination of a favorable sector backdrop, strong company fundamentals, and a specific M&A catalyst fueled the significant re-rating of Kinetik's shares in extended trading.
