K2 Airways Cargo Jet Crashes in Arabian Sea; Deep-Water Search for Five Crew Underway

A K2 Airways Boeing 737 cargo plane carrying five crew members crashed into the Arabian Sea on Tuesday night while en route from Sharjah, UAE, to Karachi, Pakistan. Pakistani rescue teams located the wreckage of the aircraft on Wednesday and are now engaged in a difficult search for the crew and the plane's flight recorders.
The Incident
The aircraft, a 27-year-old Boeing 737-400 converted freighter, reported a navigational problem at 9:18 p.m. local time (1618 GMT), according to the Pakistan Airports Authority. Flight-tracking data from Flightradar24 showed the plane exhibiting erratic altitude changes before entering a steep descent. The wreckage was subsequently found 53 nautical miles (98 km) south of the port city of Ormara.
K2 Airways confirmed that five people were on board: two pilots, two engineers, and one support staffer. Their status has not yet been officially declared. According to the family of co-pilot Faisal Jatoi, the aircraft had been in Sharjah for 10 days undergoing repairs and was waiting for a spare part from the United States before its return flight.
Challenging Recovery Operation
AdThe search and recovery operation is facing significant obstacles due to the deep-water environment. An aviation expert, speaking to Reuters on the condition of anonymity, noted that the search could be one of the most difficult in Pakistan's recent history.
Key challenges cited by the expert include:
- Water depths in the area ranging from 2,500 to over 3,500 meters.
- Strong undersea currents and poor visibility.
- Uneven seabed terrain and variable sea conditions.
These factors are complicating efforts by Pakistan's navy and maritime security teams to locate and retrieve the submerged wreckage and the crucial flight data and cockpit voice recorders, which are vital for determining the cause of the crash.
