Japanese Yen Hits 7-Month High as Dollar Weakens Ahead of Inflation Data

The Japanese yen surged to a seven-month high against the dollar on Tuesday, leading gains across most Asian currencies as the greenback remained subdued ahead of crucial U.S. inflation data. The move reflects growing expectations for a policy shift from the Bank of Japan and a broader repositioning by currency traders.
Yen Surges on Rate Hike Speculation
The USD/JPY pair fell 0.7% to 153.34, with the yen strengthening to as much as 152.89, its strongest point since February, according to data from Investing.com. The currency has now appreciated approximately 4.5% from levels around 160 per dollar seen early last week.
This rally is driven by several factors, including mounting speculation that the Bank of Japan (BOJ) will tighten monetary policy. Markets are now pricing in a 75% probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike at the BOJ's September 18 meeting. Supporting the case for tightening, Japan’s economy grew at a revised annualized rate of 1.4% in the second quarter, stronger than initial estimates.
Dollar on Back Foot Ahead of Key Inflation Report
The U.S. dollar remained on the defensive, with the dollar index trading down 0.11% at 98.81. The currency's weakness comes as investors await the latest U.S. consumer inflation figures, the final major data point before the Federal Open Market Committee's (FOMC) meeting on September 15-16.
AdFollowing a stronger-than-expected payrolls report last week, markets are pricing in a roughly 60% chance of a Fed rate hike in September. The upcoming inflation data is therefore critical for shaping policy expectations and the dollar's near-term direction.
Mixed Performance in Other Regional Currencies
Elsewhere in Asia, performance was varied. The South Korean won continued to strengthen, with the USD/KRW pair falling 0.3% to 1,340.80, supported by foreign inflows into local equities and a rally in semiconductor stocks.
Other key currency movements included:
- Chinese Yuan: The offshore yuan (USD/CNH) and onshore yuan (USD/CNY) held firm near 3.5-year highs around 6.71, bolstered by robust August trade data showing a 25% jump in exports.
- Australian Dollar: The Aussie weakened slightly, with the USD/AUD pair rising 0.1% to 1.3862 after a sharp drop in consumer sentiment revived domestic economic concerns.
- New Zealand Dollar: The kiwi also lost ground, with the USD/NZD pair climbing 0.42% to 1.707.
