Japan Secures First Emergency LNG Supply Deal with Malaysia's Petronas

Japan has entered into its first-ever emergency procurement agreement for liquefied natural gas (LNG) with Malaysia's state-owned Petronas, a strategic move designed to bolster the nation's energy security during supply disruptions.
The deal was announced on Friday by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) following an LNG producer-consumer conference in Tokyo.
Agreement Details
Under the terms of the master sales and purchase agreement, Petronas will supply LNG to the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC).
JOGMEC will then act as a supplier of last resort, providing the LNG to private Japanese buyers, such as utility companies, when they are unable to secure supplies through other channels. Tetsuya Azuma, head of METI's energy resource development division, did not disclose specific details regarding the contract's volume or duration, according to a press briefing.
AdEnhancing Supply Resilience
The agreement marks a significant step in Japan's strategy to safeguard against energy shortages. The industry ministry stated it plans to sign similar emergency supply agreements with other countries in the future.
Datuk Adif Zulkifli, Executive Vice President and CEO of Gas and Upstream at Petronas, said the deal reflects the deep trust built with JOGMEC over many years. "By creating a framework for a more flexible LNG supply arrangement in the future, we can better respond to evolving energy needs and contribute to enhancing supply resilience," he said in a statement.
In a separate development, Japan also signed a memorandum of cooperation with Montenegro for energy projects. This partnership includes the potential development of LNG receiving terminals and gas-fired power plants.
