The losses were led by declines in the Travel & Leisure, Technology, and Industrials sectors, according to Investing.com.
Laggards and Leaders
Several major industrial companies faced significant selling pressure. The worst performers on the benchmark index included:
- Fincantieri SpA (BIT:FCT), which fell 5.47%
- Stellantis NV (BIT:STLAM), which declined 4.31%
- Prysmian SpA (BIT:PRY), which was down 3.85%
AdNotably, shares in automaker Stellantis NV fell to a 5-year low during the session. In contrast, a handful of companies bucked the negative trend, with energy giant Eni SpA (BIT:ENI) rising 1.39%, followed by Poste Italiane SpA (BIT:PST) with a 0.98% gain.
Broader Market Context
The positive performance of energy stocks like Eni coincided with a sharp rally in global oil markets. WTI Crude oil futures for November delivery surged 4.84% to $96.62 a barrel, while Brent oil for November delivery climbed 4.81% to $108.04 a barrel.
Elsewhere in commodities, gold futures for December delivery declined 0.69%. In the foreign exchange market, the EUR/USD pair was little changed at 1.14, while the U.S. Dollar Index Futures, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies, edged up 0.22%.
