Background

Israel's benchmark TA 35 index closed Monday's trading session nearly flat, inching up a marginal 0.07%. The slight gain was primarily driven by strong performances in the Oil & Gas, Insurance, and Financials sectors, according to market data.

Session Highlights

Despite the muted movement of the headline index, several individual stocks saw significant activity. The day's performance was a tale of two markets, with strength in a few key names propping up the index while many other stocks fell.

Key movers on the TA 35 index included:

  • Top Performers: Tower Semiconductor Ltd (TASE:TSEM) led the gains, surging 5.42%. It was followed by energy firm Delek Group (TASE:DLEKG), which added 4.44%, and the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE:TASE) itself, up 3.36%.
  • Top Decliners: On the downside, Camtek Ltd (TASE:CAMT) fell 4.61%, Next Vision Stabilized Systems (TASE:NXSN) dropped 4.33%, and Elbit Systems Ltd (TASE:ESLT) was down 2.70%.

Broader Market Weakness

The narrow advance of the TA 35 belied wider negative sentiment across the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange. Market breadth was decidedly negative, with 306 stocks declining compared to only 166 advancing issues, while 87 stocks closed unchanged. This divergence indicates that the day's gains were concentrated in a few large-cap components rather than reflecting a broad-based market rally.

Commodity and Currency Markets

The strong performance of energy stocks like Delek Group coincided with a significant rally in global oil prices. WTI Crude oil futures for August delivery jumped 4.40% to $74.55 a barrel, while Brent oil rose 4.32%. In contrast, gold futures for August delivery fell sharply by 2.37%.

In the foreign exchange market, the Israeli shekel weakened against the U.S. dollar, with the USD/ILS pair rising 0.83% to 3.03. The U.S. Dollar Index Futures, which measures the greenback against a basket of major currencies, was up 0.21%.
