Indonesia's Pertamina and Boeing Sign Agreement to Develop Sustainable Aviation Fuel

JAKARTA – Indonesia's state-owned energy company, Pertamina, has partnered with American aircraft manufacturer Boeing to advance the development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the Southeast Asian nation. The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore opportunities in building a domestic SAF industry, according to a statement from Pertamina.
The collaboration aims to support Indonesia's goals of decarbonizing its aviation sector and progressing toward net-zero emissions. Under the agreement, Pertamina and Boeing will work together to identify potential feedstock sources, develop new SAF technologies, and provide support for policy development in the sector.
"We are confident this collaboration will accelerate the development of a competitive SAF industry, and create greater value for Indonesia’s economy," said Pertamina CEO Simon Aloysius Mantiri. Boeing Indonesia's Managing Director, Indra Duivenvoorde, added that Indonesia has the potential to become a regional leader in sustainable aviation.
AdThis initiative comes as Boeing projects significant growth in the region, with passenger traffic in Southeast Asia expected to increase by approximately 7% annually through 2044, driving demand for nearly 4,900 new aircraft. Pertamina has already initiated several SAF projects, including production at its Cilacap Biorefinery, which utilizes feedstocks like used cooking oil.
