Background

India's foreign exchange reserves surged to a new all-time high, driven by a steady influx of U.S. dollars following recent policy initiatives by the nation's central bank aimed at attracting foreign capital.

Record Inflows Boost Reserves

According to data released Friday by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the country's forex reserves increased by $12.4 billion for the week ending August 21. This brought the total to $729.33 billion, surpassing the previous record of $728.5 billion set in February.

The substantial increase reflects the success of measures designed to strengthen India's external financial position. A robust level of reserves provides a critical buffer against global economic shocks and helps stabilize the Indian rupee.

Central Bank Policies Drive Capital Inflow

The growth in reserves is largely attributed to a series of initiatives launched by the RBI in early June. One key measure was a special deposit scheme targeting overseas Indian citizens, which has proven effective in attracting capital.

As of August 21, these policies have successfully drawn in a cumulative $72.8 billion in funds. This significant inflow has helped alleviate pressure on India's current account and may allow the country to avoid a third consecutive year of a balance of payments deficit.
