Summary
Indian equity benchmarks, the Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex, closed down 0.66% and 0.72% respectively on Tuesday, weighed down by losses in technology, auto, and banking sectors. A rise in market volatility and a weaker rupee also marked the session.
Indian equity benchmarks closed in negative territory on Tuesday, with broad-based selling pressure led by the technology, auto, and banking sectors. At the market close, the NSE Nifty 50 index was down 0.66%, while the BSE Sensex 30 index concluded the session 0.72% lower.
Market Breadth and Volatility
The negative sentiment was widespread, as reflected in the market breadth. On the India National Stock Exchange (NSE), falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones by a significant margin of 1,775 to 758, with 53 ending unchanged. A similar trend was observed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), where 2,566 stocks fell and 1,407 advanced.
Investor caution was also evident in a key market indicator. The India VIX, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, rose 3.88% to 13.80, signaling increased uncertainty among traders.
Sector and Stock Movers
AdTechnology and financial stocks were among the biggest drags on the major indices. The worst performer on the Nifty 50 was HCL Technologies Ltd. (NSE:HCLT), which saw its shares fall by 4.64%. Other notable decliners included:

- HDFC Life Insurance Company Ltd. (NSE:HDFL), down 2.97%
- Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. (BO:TAMO), which lost 2.59%
Despite the market downturn, a few large-cap stocks bucked the trend. Bharti Airtel Ltd. (NSE:BRTI) was the top gainer on the Nifty 50, rising 1.69%. The healthcare sector also showed strength, with Apollo Hospitals Enterprises Ltd. (NSE:APLH) climbing 1.46% to an all-time high and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (NSE:SUN) adding 1.23% to hit a 52-week high.
