Indian Stocks Decline as Tech Sell-Off Pushes Nifty 50 to One-Month Low

Indian equities retreated at the close of trading on Monday, with benchmark indices falling to their lowest levels in a month amid broad-based selling. The declines were primarily driven by weakness in the information technology, real estate, and metals sectors.
Key Index Performance
At the close of trading, India's Nifty 50 index fell by 0.57% to reach a new one-month low. The broader BSE Sensex 30 index also finished the session in negative territory, declining by 0.50%.
Market sentiment appeared cautious, as reflected by the India VIX, a key gauge of expected market volatility. The index, often referred to as the "fear gauge," rose 3.77% to 11.08, indicating an increase in investor uncertainty.
Sector Pressures and Stock Movers
The information technology (IT) sector was the primary drag on the market. Shares of major IT firms were among the session's worst performers:
Ad- Infosys Ltd (NSE:INFY) was the biggest laggard on the Nifty 50, falling 3.78%.
- Tech Mahindra Ltd (NSE:TEML) declined 2.40%.
- Tata Steel Ltd (BO:TISC) also contributed to the losses, dropping 1.85% on the BSE Sensex.
Despite the broader downturn, some companies posted gains. Top performers on the Nifty 50 included Apollo Hospitals Enterprises Ltd. (NSE:APLH), which rose 2.02%, and Eicher Motors Ltd. (NSE:EICH), which added 1.04%.
Market Breadth and Context
The negative sentiment was widespread, with losing stocks outnumbering gainers on both major exchanges. On the India National Stock Exchange (NSE), 1,479 stocks fell while 1,151 advanced. Similarly, on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), 2,273 stocks declined compared to 1,925 that gained.
In commodities markets, Gold Futures for December delivery traded lower, down approximately 0.78%. Oil prices were mixed, with the November Brent contract seeing a slight gain.
