Background

Indian equity benchmarks closed in negative territory on Wednesday, as broad-based selling pressure erased earlier gains. The decline was led by significant losses in the information technology, banking, and real estate sectors, reflecting a shift in investor sentiment.

Market Performance in Detail

At the close of trading, the NSE Nifty 50 index fell by 0.79%, while the BSE Sensex 30 index registered a larger decline of 0.92%.

The market breadth was decidedly negative, indicating widespread selling. On the India National Stock Exchange (NSE), falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones by a margin of 1,785 to 756. A similar trend was observed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), where 2,559 stocks fell compared to 1,416 that advanced.

Key Sector and Stock Movers

The session's downturn was driven by weakness in several key industries. The worst-performing stocks on the Nifty 50 highlighted this trend:

Volatility Rises as Rupee Weakens

Investor uncertainty was reflected in the India VIX, a key gauge of market volatility. The index, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, jumped by 5.62% to 13.31, suggesting that traders are anticipating larger price swings in the near term.

In the currency markets, the Indian Rupee weakened against the US dollar, with the USD/INR pair rising by 0.46% to 96.67. Meanwhile, commodity markets saw gains, with key crude oil and gold futures contracts trading higher.
