Background

Inflows into Indian equity mutual funds surged 18.8% in August from the previous month, propelled by record-high investments from retail investors through systematic savings plans. The robust domestic appetite for equities persisted even as broader market benchmarks declined, according to data released Thursday by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI).

Inflow Details

Overall net inflows into equity mutual funds reached 293.29 billion rupees (approximately $3.08 billion) in August. This marks the 66th consecutive month of positive net inflows for the category.

Key drivers of the growth included:

  • Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs): Contributions through these popular monthly savings plans hit an all-time high of 322.97 billion rupees (approx. $3.39 billion), a 1.1% increase from July.
  • Small- and Mid-Cap Funds: These categories saw record monthly buying. Inflows into small-cap funds were 79.73 billion rupees, while mid-cap funds attracted 69.89 billion rupees.
  • Large-Cap Funds: In contrast, large-cap focused funds experienced outflows for the second straight month, with investors pulling a net 11.47 billion rupees.

Market Divergence and Investor Outlook

The strong domestic inflows occurred while India's benchmark stock indices, the Nifty 50 and Sensex, fell 1.2% and 1.5% respectively in August. The declines were attributed to rising oil prices and concerns over potential U.S. interest rate hikes. However, the persistent buying from domestic investors helped propel India's small- and mid-cap indices to all-time highs during the month.

Analysts noted that the trend signals a maturing investor base. "Persistent SIP inflows show that retail investors are looking through near-term volatility and continuing to allocate to Indian equities for the long term," said Hiren Dasani, chief investment officer for emerging markets at WhiteOak Capital, in a comment to Reuters. Venkat Chalasani, CEO of AMFI, added that positive domestic growth data is supporting investor sentiment despite volatile global cues.
