Indian Equities Close Lower as Banking Stocks Weigh on Major Indices

Summary
India's benchmark Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex indices fell on Monday, dragged down by significant losses in major banking stocks despite a greater number of advancing stocks on the broader market.
Indian benchmark equity indices closed in negative territory on Monday, with heavyweight banking stocks leading the decline. The Nifty 50 index fell by 0.39%, while the broader BSE Sensex 30 concluded the session down 0.57%.
Banking Sector Leads Declines
The day's losses were primarily driven by significant pullbacks in the banking, Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), and healthcare sectors. Banking stocks were among the hardest hit, weighing heavily on the major indices.
Key underperformers on the Nifty 50 included:
- Axis Bank Ltd (AXBK): fell 5.37%
- HDFC Bank Ltd (HDBK): declined 5.08%
- Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd (KTKM): was down 2.12%
Pockets of Strength and Market Breadth
AdDespite the headline index losses, market breadth was positive, indicating that the decline was not widespread. On the National Stock Exchange (NSE), 1,339 stocks advanced compared to 1,199 that declined, suggesting strength in mid-cap and small-cap segments.
Several large-cap stocks bucked the negative trend. Notable gainers included retailer Trent Ltd, which rose 3.04%, along with Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd and Nestle India Ltd, which gained 1.96% and 1.81%, respectively.
Volatility and Currency Moves
Market volatility, as measured by the India VIX index, decreased by 1.90% to 12.90, suggesting a lack of widespread investor panic despite the drop in the main indices. In currency markets, the Indian Rupee weakened against the U.S. dollar, with the USD/INR pair rising 0.26% to 96.53, according to market data.
