IMAX, Theater Stocks Gain on Strong Box Office Projections for Nolan's 'The Odyssey'

Summary
Christopher Nolan's latest film, 'The Odyssey,' is projected to open with as much as $200 million globally, driving gains in exhibition stocks like IMAX and AMC as the summer box office shows signs of a strong recovery.
Christopher Nolan’s new film, 'The Odyssey,' is projected for a global opening weekend of approximately $200 million, a figure that is boosting investor sentiment for movie theater stocks and particularly for large-format exhibitor IMAX Corp. The film, which opens Friday, is forecast to generate between $90 million and $100 million domestically, which would mark the director's strongest debut since 'The Dark Knight Rises' in 2012, according to a report from Variety.
IMAX in Focus
IMAX Corp. (IMAX) is seen as a primary financial beneficiary, as 'The Odyssey' is the first feature film shot entirely with IMAX 70mm cameras. However, only 41 theaters in the world—25 of which are in the U.S.—are equipped to project the film in its native format, creating intense demand for a limited supply of tickets.
Demand has been so high that some screenings are sold out for weeks. "We're sold out in some theaters into the fifth week already, and the 2am shows, the 7am shows, so there's certainly more demand," IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond said in an interview with Variety.
Exhibitor Stocks See Broad Uplift
The positive outlook is providing a lift to the broader movie exhibition sector, which has seen renewed institutional interest. Analyst actions and market performance reflect growing confidence:
Ad- AMC Entertainment (AMC): The stock was upgraded to Buy from Hold by Texas Capital Securities on July 15, with the firm raising its price target to $3.00 from $2.00. The upgrade cited the resolution of near-term debt issues and a strengthening box office.
- Marcus Corp. (MCS): Benchmark reiterated a Buy rating and a $22 price target on the regional theater operator. The firm also raised its Q2 2026 revenue estimate for Marcus, following an 11.2% year-over-year increase in domestic box office revenue for the quarter. Shares of Marcus have risen 41% year-to-date.
- Cinemark (CNK): As a major theater chain, Cinemark is also positioned to benefit from the film's wide release across 3,900 North American screens.
Market Context and Key Catalysts
The film's performance is a critical test for both its studio and the industry. Produced by Universal Pictures for $250 million with an additional estimated $125 million in marketing costs, 'The Odyssey' requires a sustained box office run to be profitable. Its debut is part of a wider trend that could see the 2026 summer box office become the strongest since 2019, as reported by the Financial Times.
Investors will be closely watching two upcoming events. The first concrete financial results will arrive Sunday and Monday with the release of official opening-weekend box office numbers. Additionally, IMAX is scheduled to report its Q2 2026 earnings on Thursday, July 23, where management's commentary on premium ticket sales will be a key focus for analysts.
