Imax Stock Surges on Strong Earnings Beat and Record 'Odyssey' Box Office

Shares of Imax Corp. (NYSE: IMX) surged 5.9% in pre-market trading Tuesday after the company reported second-quarter financial results that surpassed Wall Street expectations, bolstered by a record-breaking box office performance from the blockbuster film "The Odyssey."
Earnings Beat and Box Office Strength
The entertainment technology company announced revenue of $102.8 million for the second quarter of 2026, well above the consensus estimate of $93.7 million. Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) came in at $0.43, significantly outperforming the analyst forecast of $0.28.
This strong performance was underpinned by the successful theatrical run of Christopher Nolan’s "The Odyssey," which was shot entirely with IMAX cameras. The film's debut set multiple records for the company, including:
- A global opening weekend of $52 million in IMAX theaters.
- Capturing 20% of the movie's total worldwide box office on opening weekend.
- Generating $29.6 million across 444 screens in North America alone.
AdMarket Reaction and Analyst Outlook
The stock's sharp upward move stood in stark contrast to the broader market, which saw the S&P 500, Dow Jones, and Nasdaq all trade lower. This indicates the rally was driven by company-specific fundamentals rather than macroeconomic trends.
The results affirmed the bullish outlook held by some analysts heading into the report. Wedbush, for instance, had previously reiterated an Outperform rating and a $46 price target on the stock. Analysts believe Imax remains on track to achieve its 2026 targets, which include approximately $1.4 billion in global box office revenue and an adjusted EBITDA margin exceeding 45%.
