Huawei Unveils Mate XT2 Foldable Phone to Defend Market Lead in China

Huawei Technologies launched a new version of its flagship foldable smartphone on Monday, the Mate XT2, intensifying competition in China's high-end device market. The release comes as the company seeks to defend its market leadership against rivals Xiaomi, which is unveiling a competing device the same day, and Apple, which has a product launch scheduled for Wednesday.
New Technology and Features
The Mate XT2 introduces a new design that folds out twice to form a tablet-sized screen and is powered by Huawei's new Kirin 9050 Pro chip. According to the company, the chip is engineered for greater computing power with lower electricity consumption, a key development as Huawei navigates U.S. restrictions on advanced technology access.
Huawei also highlighted several hardware upgrades in the new model, attributing a 42% better overall performance compared to its predecessor based on internal company tests. Key enhancements include:
- A redesigned folding mechanism
- Improved water resistance
- Upgraded cameras
- An optional privacy screen that limits viewing angles
AdMarket Landscape and Competition
The launch is timed to preempt expected announcements from key competitors. According to consultancy IDC, Huawei led China’s smartphone market in the second quarter with a 22.6% share, ahead of Apple at 18.1% and Xiaomi at 12.4%.
Huawei's dominance is even more pronounced in the foldable category. The company accounted for 68% of foldable phone shipments in China during the second quarter, according to U.S.-based research firm Smart Analytics Global. The new Mate XT2 is positioned to protect this lead as the market anticipates a potential foldable device from Apple and a new model from Xiaomi.
