Background

HSBC Global Investment Research has raised its year-end 2026 price target for the S&P 500 to 8,100 from a previous forecast of 7,650. The bank attributed the upgrade to resilient U.S. corporate earnings that have consistently surpassed expectations, supported by strong momentum in artificial intelligence-related capital expenditures.

With the S&P 500 currently trading near 7,692, HSBC's new target implies a potential upside of approximately 5.3% from current levels. The index has already gained about 11.8% year-to-date, according to the report.

Earnings Growth Fuels Optimism

The core of HSBC's bullish outlook is the exceptional strength in corporate profitability. The firm highlighted that earnings per share (EPS) for S&P 500 constituents grew by nearly 40% in the first half of 2026, with growth for the second half expected to exceed 25%.

For the full year, HSBC projects that S&P 500 earnings will grow by approximately 33%, reaching an EPS of $360. The bank's 8,100 target is based on applying a price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of roughly 22.5x to this forecast, a valuation it notes is broadly in line with long-term historical averages.

AI Spending a Key Catalyst

Sustained investment in AI remains a primary driver of the positive earnings trend. HSBC noted that as large technology companies continue to boost capital spending on AI infrastructure, semiconductor manufacturers and the wider AI-related ecosystem are seeing significant benefits, bolstering the S&P 500's overall profit growth.

However, the bank stated that the market's strength is not solely dependent on a few tech giants. A resilient U.S. macroeconomic environment and steady consumer demand are providing support for S&P 500 companies outside of the technology sector, suggesting a broadening of the earnings growth.

Market Outlook

The strong performance during the second-quarter earnings season has reinforced HSBC's confidence, prompting widespread upward revisions to earnings forecasts from analysts. Looking ahead, the bank believes the market's trajectory will increasingly depend on companies delivering on these elevated profit expectations.

Key projections from HSBC's report include:

  • Year-End 2026 Target: 8,100
  • Projected 2026 EPS: $360
  • Implied P/E Multiple: ~22.5x
  • Potential Upside: ~5.3%
