Hotter-Than-Expected PPI Data Sends Bitcoin Below $77,000 Amid Rate Hike Fears

A U.S. inflation report showing producer prices rose faster than anticipated has stoked fears of a more aggressive Federal Reserve, sending shockwaves through both traditional and digital asset markets. The sell-off pushed Bitcoin below the $77,000 mark as investors reassessed the outlook for monetary policy.
Inflation Data Rattles Markets
The catalyst for the market downturn was the August Producer Price Index (PPI), which surged 5.4% year-over-year, significantly outpacing market expectations of a 5.1% increase, according to a report from Investing.com. The data heightened concerns about persistent inflation, leading to a sharp reaction in the bond market where the 30-year U.S. Treasury yield climbed to a 19-year high.
This spike in yields on government debt increases the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like cryptocurrencies and gold, placing broad downward pressure on risk assets. Traditional equity markets also felt the strain, with the S&P 500 index logging its fourth consecutive day of declines.
Broad Sell-Off Hits Crypto
The cryptocurrency market saw widespread losses in response to the macroeconomic pressure. Bitcoin fell nearly 2% over 24 hours, approaching a critical technical support level of $76,270, as noted by Bitget analyst Lewis Huang. The broader market fared worse, with the CoinDesk 20 index falling approximately 3%.
The risk-off sentiment was evident across the market, with 95 of the assets in the CoinDesk 100 index posting losses. Notable altcoin declines included:
Ad- Zcash (ZEC): Down about 12%
- Hyperliquid (HYPE): Down around 7%
- Dogecoin (DOGE): Down approximately 6%
- Solana (SOL): Down over 3% to just under $100
Ethereum (ETH) and Binance Coin (BNB) showed more resilience, with declines of about 2% and 1%, respectively. In a rare display of strength, Tron (TRX) remained stable, holding its ground and posting a weekly gain of over 3%.
Investor Outlook and Capital Flows
Data on capital flows revealed a cautious institutional stance, with U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs experiencing $120 million in net outflows on Wednesday, more than double the previous day's total. Conversely, some funds tracking Ethereum, XRP, and Solana saw inflows, suggesting some investors may be rotating capital within the digital asset sector.
All eyes are now on the upcoming Consumer Price Index (CPI) data. Meanwhile, interest rate futures markets have significantly adjusted their expectations, now pricing in an approximately 70% probability of a Fed rate hike at its September meeting, up from 50% just two weeks prior. "The market has prepared for a more hawkish stance from the Fed and what is very likely to be a rate hike," said Joel Krueger, a market strategist at LMAX Group.
