Hooker Furniture Stock Surges on Profit Beat and $7.9 Million Tariff Recovery

Shares of Hooker Furniture (HOFT) surged more than 10% in pre-open trading after the home furnishings company announced strong fiscal second-quarter results, marking its third consecutive profitable quarter and a significant year-over-year improvement in earnings.
Quarterly Results Exceed Expectations
For the quarter ended August 2, 2026, the Martinsville, Virginia-based company reported a net income of $1.7 million, a substantial turnaround from a net loss recorded in the same period last year. According to the company's release, operating income reached $1.3 million, compared to an operating loss of $0.5 million in the prior-year quarter.
A key factor boosting the bottom line was a $7.9 million tariff recovery. This one-time gain stems from a February 2026 U.S. Supreme Court decision that invalidated certain tariffs previously levied under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Hooker Furniture noted these tariffs had cost the company an estimated $10.3 million in pre-tax charges during fiscal 2026.
Strengthening Demand and Balance Sheet
AdBeyond the tariff-related relief, the company's operational metrics signaled improving business momentum. The report highlighted strengthening fundamentals that caught investor attention:
- Consolidated order backlog grew 6.2% year-over-year.
- The backlog also increased 8.4% sequentially from the previous quarter.
- Cash on the balance sheet rose to $18.7 million.
- The company has eliminated its remaining term loan balance.
These figures suggest strengthening demand for its products, particularly in its Hooker Branded and Domestic Upholstery segments. The improved cash position and debt-free status provide greater financial flexibility, a positive sign for investors in a challenging economic environment for the home furnishings sector, which continues to face headwinds from soft housing activity and cautious consumer spending.
