Background

Shares of major Chinese oil companies advanced in Hong Kong trading as escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East pushed international crude prices toward $100 a barrel.

Geopolitical Tensions Drive Prices

The gains followed a warning from Iran on Monday that it would retaliate if the U.S. were to attack its assets, according to a report from Zhitong Finance. The statement highlighted the vulnerability of energy infrastructure in the Gulf, including American oil and gas interests.

These heightened supply-side risks have directly impacted commodity markets, with Brent crude futures climbing to near the $100 per barrel threshold.

Oil Majors Post Gains

In response to the rising oil prices, major energy stocks on the Hong Kong exchange saw notable increases in early trading. Key movers included:

Goldman Sees Bigger Risk in Refined Products

In a note to clients, Goldman Sachs Group warned that oil prices could potentially surge to $120 a barrel if attacks on shipping in the region were to escalate.

However, the investment bank suggested that the supply shock could be even more severe for refined products. Goldman recommended that investors looking to hedge geopolitical risk consider long positions in markets like diesel and European natural gas, which it believes face a greater potential disruption than crude oil.
