Hitachi Energy Pledges $528 Million for New Mississippi Transformer Plant

Hitachi Energy will invest $528 million to build a new factory in Mississippi dedicated to producing electrical transformers, a move designed to address surging U.S. power demand. The company announced Tuesday that the new facility in Gallman, Mississippi, is expected to commence operations in 2029.
Addressing a Critical Shortage
The investment marks the single largest component of Hitachi Energy's broader $1.5 billion plan to expand its manufacturing footprint in the United States. The Gallman plant will be approximately double the size of the company's existing facility in Crystal Springs, Mississippi.
This expansion directly targets a growing bottleneck in the nation's electrical infrastructure. Record power consumption, fueled by the rapid growth of data centers, semiconductor plants, and the electrification of transportation and buildings, has created a significant shortage of essential components like transformers.
Market Impact and Production Focus
AdThe new factory will produce mid-range transformers specifically for projects with large power requirements, such as data centers and industrial operations. According to the Zurich-based company, these units are roughly the size of a detached garage, distinct from the larger, house-sized transformers used for high-voltage grid transmission.
"The transformers produced there in a couple of years will be essential for building data centers, for investing into semiconductors, because they are closing this critical gap from transmission transformers to industrial production," said Andreas Schierenbeck, CEO of Hitachi Energy, at a conference in Houston.
Government and Industry Context
The project was highlighted by U.S. officials as a crucial step in modernizing the country's power grid. "We’re going to build big things in our electrical infrastructure, but we need the components," U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said at the same conference. "We need the transformers to build that big expansion."
