Hindustan Unilever Shares Tumble on Q1 Profit Miss and Margin Concerns

Summary
The consumer goods giant's stock fell over 6% after reporting a 4% year-over-year decline in first-quarter net profit, which missed analyst estimates due to rising input costs and one-off charges.
Shares of Hindustan Unilever (HUL) plunged on Tuesday after the company announced a year-over-year decline in its first-quarter profit, falling short of market expectations and raising concerns about margin pressure.
Earnings Disappoint
The stock fell as much as 6.3% to trade at ₹2,038.4 after the company reported a 4% drop in standalone net profit for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027. Key figures from the earnings release include:
- Net Profit: ₹2,631 crore, down from ₹2,732 crore in the same period a year earlier.
- Analyst Expectations: The result missed consensus forecasts by approximately 5.9%.
- Revenue: Top-line revenue showed healthy growth, rising to ₹175,290 million from ₹159,580 million in the prior-year quarter.
Despite the increase in revenue, investors focused on the weaker bottom line, which was impacted by rising expenses.
Margin Pressures and One-Off Costs
AdHUL attributed the profit decline to higher raw material and operating costs, which weighed on margins. The company noted that some of these expense pressures were linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The quarter's results also included significant one-time expenses, including ₹115 crore in restructuring charges and ₹5 crore in acquisition and disposal costs. Excluding these exceptional items, HUL's adjusted profit for the quarter rose 9% to ₹3,623 crore, suggesting stronger underlying operational performance than the headline figure indicates.
Market Reaction and Context
The sharp sell-off in HUL's stock was company-specific, occurring while India's benchmark Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex indices were broadly flat. The market appeared to prioritize the headline profit miss and margin erosion over the solid revenue growth and higher adjusted profit.
The negative earnings report accelerated a pre-existing technical downtrend for the stock, which was already trading below its 50-day and 200-day moving averages. The session's decline pushed the share price toward its 52-week low of ₹2,022.5.
