Background

The market distribution of callable bull and bear contracts (CBBCs) for the Hang Seng Index stood at a 54:46 ratio as of September 18, indicating a slight predominance of bullish positions among derivative traders, according to data from Zhitong Finance APP.

Key Contract Levels

An analysis of the outstanding contracts, based on a distribution map from CITIC Securities, reveals key levels of concentration that traders are watching. These strike prices often act as potential support and resistance for the underlying index, as a large number of contracts are knocked out if these levels are reached.

Bear Contract Distribution

The heaviest concentration of outstanding bear contracts, which bet on a decline in the index, is clustered in the 24,900-24,999 strike price range. This zone holds 560 contracts, an increase of 74 from the previous trading day.

More notably, the largest build-up of new bearish positions occurred in the 24,800-24,899 range. This level saw an influx of 481 new contracts, bringing its total to 513. This suggests traders are actively establishing new downside protection or speculative shorts below the 25,000 psychological barrier.

Bull Contract Distribution

For bull contracts, which profit from a rising index, both the heaviest concentration and the largest increase in positions were recorded in the same strike price range: 24,100-24,199.

This support zone now holds a total of 1,075 outstanding bull contracts after 649 new contracts were added in the last session. The significant inflow indicates a strong belief among some traders that this level will provide a floor for the Hang Seng Index in the near term.
