Guggenheim Taps Abivax as Top Biotech Pick on Obefazimod Outlook

Summary
Guggenheim Securities has reiterated its Buy rating on Abivax, naming it the firm's top biotech pick following positive business updates. The investment firm projects peak global sales of approximately $5 billion for the company's lead drug candidate, obefazimod.
Guggenheim Securities has identified ABIVAX SOCIÉTÉ ANONYME (ABVX) as its top investment idea in the biotechnology sector, reaffirming its Buy rating and a $175 price target on the company's stock. The endorsement follows Abivax's recent first-half 2026 earnings report and operational updates, which the investment firm said reinforced its positive outlook.
Strong Financials and Regulatory Progress
In a note to clients, Guggenheim highlighted several key updates that underpin its bullish thesis. The firm pointed to Abivax's strong capital position and constructive engagement with regulators as significant positive developments.
Key takeaways from the company's update include:
- Robust Cash Position: Abivax reported pro-forma cash of €1.2 billion as of early July, which provides a projected cash runway into the fourth quarter of 2029 under current operating plans.
- Positive Regulatory Interaction: The company's pre-New Drug Application (NDA) meeting with regulators was described as positive, focusing on the content and timing for a future submission of its lead drug, obefazimod. The discussions did not raise new concerns about the drug's safety or efficacy, according to the report.
AdObefazimod's Market Potential
Obefazimod is Abivax's drug candidate for treating ulcerative colitis (UC). According to company projections cited in the report, the drug could eventually capture a 20% market share in the U.S. ulcerative colitis market, which is forecast to expand to $15 billion by 2032.
Guggenheim's own financial model estimates combined global peak sales of approximately $5 billion for obefazimod in both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. The investment firm also noted that Abivax is exploring combination therapies for the drug, with a candidate expected to be selected by the end of 2026 and a clinical program slated to begin by late 2027 or early 2028.
Abivax is scheduled to present further subgroup analyses and long-term safety and efficacy data at the upcoming United European Gastroenterology Week (UEGW) conference in Barcelona, Spain.
