Grupo Mexico Q2 Profit Jumps 79% as Higher Copper Prices Offset Lower Production

Summary
The mining and transportation conglomerate reported a net profit of $2.20 billion, significantly beating analyst estimates, as a 30.5% surge in copper prices outweighed a modest decline in output.
Grupo Mexico reported its second-quarter net profit surged 79% from the previous year, driven by a sharp increase in copper prices that more than compensated for a slight dip in production. The mining and transportation giant posted a net profit of $2.20 billion, according to a company filing on Tuesday.
Earnings Beat Expectations
The company's bottom-line results significantly surpassed analyst forecasts. The reported net profit of $2.20 billion was well ahead of the $1.66 billion consensus estimate from analysts polled by LSEG.
Total revenue for the quarter climbed 35% year-over-year to $5.71 billion, narrowly beating the forecast of $5.65 billion. The strong performance was primarily fueled by the company's key mining division, where sales rose 41.3% compared to the same period in 2025.
Price Overcomes Production Dip
The impressive profit growth came despite lower output. Grupo Mexico produced 257,537 metric tons of copper in the second quarter, a 3.7% decrease from the year-ago period. The company attributed the decline to lower production in Peru and at its U.S. Asarco unit, which was partially offset by increased output from its Mexican operations.
AdHowever, this operational headwind was overshadowed by a robust pricing environment. The average price for copper increased 30.5% to $6.16 per pound, up from $4.72 per pound in the second quarter of 2025.
Outlook and Project Financing
Looking ahead, Grupo Mexico maintained its full-year 2026 production guidance of 1.034 million tons of copper. The company also announced it had raised $1.25 billion last month through a 10-year senior unsecured bond issue.
Proceeds from the bond sale are slated for the development of its Tia Maria copper project in Peru. The project was 42% complete at the end of the quarter and is targeted to begin operations in the second half of the year, according to the filing.
