Grupa Azoty Stock Slides on Warning of Weak Fertilizer Demand
Text size
Background

Shares in Grupa Azoty (WSE:ATTP) fell by approximately 4% on Friday following a company warning about weak fertilizer demand expected for the third quarter, driven by the challenge of surging natural gas prices.

High Gas Prices Squeeze Margins

The company's outlook highlights a critical challenge for the fertilizer industry, where natural gas is a primary feedstock. Rising gas costs directly increase the expense of producing nitrogen-based fertilizers, forcing manufacturers to either absorb the cost and shrink their profit margins or pass the increase on to customers.

This dynamic is creating uncertainty over farmer affordability in the second half of 2026. "At some point, when gas keeps rising and rising, there is a barrier to simply passing those prices on to farmers," said Jakub Szkopek, an analyst at Erste Group, commenting on the situation.

Other Investor Concerns

Beyond the immediate pressure from energy costs, analysts have pointed to other factors weighing on investor sentiment. According to Szkopek, these additional headwinds include:

  • A potential delay in the sale of Azoty’s Polimery Police plant due to an ongoing arbitration case between LyondellBasell and Orlen (WSE:PKN).
  • A repeatedly postponed share issue to the state, creating further uncertainty for the company's capital structure.
