Goldman Sachs Investor Trip Highlights Greek Banks' Focus on Growth and Capital Strength

Goldman Sachs hosted an investor field trip in Athens on September 7-8, providing institutional investors with direct access to the management of Greece's largest banks and key economic officials. The meetings with Eurobank, National Bank of Greece, Piraeus Bank, Alpha Bank, and Bank of Cyprus revealed a collective focus on sustainable growth, capital generation, and operational efficiency amid a strengthening Greek economy.
Banks Emphasize Growth, Capital, and Efficiency
Management teams from the participating banks provided updates on their strategic priorities and outlooks. Common themes included confidence in loan growth, prudent risk management, and a commitment to improving profitability.
Key points from the discussions included:
- Eurobank noted a significant investment gap in Greece and Bulgaria compared to peer nations, signaling room for growth. Management stated that corporate loan spreads continue to compress, though the trend is slowing, and they do not anticipate demand destruction from further interest rate hikes if they remain in the 2-3% range.
- National Bank of Greece (NBG) expressed confidence in sustainable medium-term lending growth, arguing that years of underinvestment will support loan demand even after the Recovery and Resilience Facility concludes. The bank's management stressed its focus remains on lending quality rather than loosening covenants to accelerate growth.
- Piraeus Bank highlighted the capital-generative nature of its operations. The bank is on track to exceed its full-year 2026 Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) ratio target of approximately 13% and is targeting a cost-to-income ratio of roughly 30% by 2030.
- Alpha Bank emphasized its goal of increasing the resilience of its business model and aims to grow its earnings per share at a faster rate than its peers. The bank is scheduled to host an investor day on November 5.
- Bank of Cyprus pointed to the resilience of the Cypriot economy and its strategic optionality afforded by high CET1 ratios. Management also highlighted its low-cost deposit base, with an average remuneration of approximately 27 basis points.
AdEconomic Backdrop Supports Sector Confidence
The positive outlook from the banking sector was supported by commentary from the Greek Ministry of Economy and Finance. The Chair of the Council of Economic Advisors emphasized the sustainable trajectory of Greece’s economic growth, according to the trip summary.
This growth is reportedly supported by public investment programs and a recent broadening of contributing sectors beyond tourism. This diversification is seen as a key factor in providing a stable foundation for the banks' lending and investment activities.
