Gold Surpasses $4,100 as Middle East Tensions Drive Safe-Haven Demand

Summary
Gold prices climbed past the key $4,100 level, buoyed by safe-haven buying amid escalating geopolitical risks in the Middle East. Investors are weighing the inflationary impact of rising energy prices against the Federal Reserve's upcoming policy decision.
Gold prices extended their rally on Wednesday, rising above the $4,100 per ounce threshold as escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East bolstered the metal's safe-haven appeal. The move builds on the previous session's gains, with investors closely monitoring the potential for higher energy prices to complicate the Federal Reserve's monetary policy outlook.
As of 21:44 ET (01:44 GMT), spot gold (XAU/USD) was up 1% at $4,119.54 an ounce, according to Investing.com data. Gold futures for delivery saw a 1.2% increase to $4,123.90 an ounce. Other precious metals also advanced, with spot silver climbing 1.9% and platinum gaining 2.4%.
Geopolitical Risks Fuel Rally
The primary driver for gold's recent strength is heightened conflict in the Middle East. According to reports, the U.S. and Iran exchanged fresh strikes near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments. Concurrently, Yemen's Houthi movement has renewed threats against shipping in the Red Sea.
These hostilities have pushed energy prices higher, adding to concerns over global supply disruptions. Attacks along Russia's Black Sea coast, a key export route for Kazakh crude, have further stoked fears of persistent energy-driven inflation, a dynamic that traditionally supports gold as an inflation hedge.
Fed Outlook and Technical Picture
AdPersistently high energy prices present a challenge for the Federal Reserve, which is scheduled to hold its next policy meeting on July 28-29. While elevated interest rates typically act as a headwind for non-yielding bullion, the current geopolitical environment has shifted investor focus toward gold's role as a store of value.
According to Tony Sycamore, a market analyst at IG, gold's ability to rally despite a stronger U.S. dollar and rising Treasury yields suggests investors are re-establishing the metal's safe-haven status. Sycamore noted that key technical levels to watch are:
- A potential support base forming around the late-June low of $3,942.
- A break above downtrend resistance near $4,120 could signal further gains.
- A subsequent move through the early-July high of $4,202 would strengthen the case for a broader recovery toward the 200-day moving average near $4,494.
Sycamore added that IG remains "cautiously bullish" on gold as long as prices remain above the key support level at $3,942.
