Gold Prices Hold Near $4,400 as Traders Await Key US Inflation Data

Summary
Gold prices remained stable as investors cautiously awaited upcoming U.S. inflation reports, which are expected to provide critical signals for the Federal Reserve's next interest rate decision.
Gold prices were little changed on Thursday, holding in a narrow range near the $4,400 per ounce level as investors awaited key U.S. inflation data for fresh clues on the Federal Reserve's monetary policy path. The precious metal's stability reflects a market balancing the pressure from rising Treasury yields against strong underlying safe-haven demand.
Inflation Reports in Focus
Market participants are closely watching for Thursday's U.S. producer price index (PPI) and Friday's consumer price index (CPI). These reports are seen as critical inputs for the Federal Reserve's policy-setting meeting next week. According to the source, swaps markets are currently pricing in approximately a 65% probability of an interest rate hike this month.
As of 20:43 ET, spot gold was trading 0.1% lower at $4,398.53 an ounce, while gold futures had declined 0.4% to $4,442.00 an ounce. Higher interest rates tend to weigh on non-yielding assets like gold by increasing their opportunity cost.
Competing Market Pressures
AdGold faces near-term headwinds from rising U.S. 10-year Treasury yields, which climbed after a government debt-buying plan failed to sway the bond market. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and their effect on oil prices, with Brent crude topping $100 a barrel, are also adding to inflation concerns and complicating the Fed's outlook.
Despite these pressures, investor demand remains a significant source of support. The World Gold Council reported that global gold-backed ETFs attracted $18 billion in August, their second-largest monthly inflow on record. This pushed total holdings up by 121 tonnes to a record 4,189 tonnes.
Technical Outlook
According to Tony Sycamore, a senior market analyst at IG, gold remains below its 200-day moving average of around $4,537. Sycamore noted that the metal would need to reclaim this key technical level to signal that its recent pullback has concluded and that the broader uptrend is resuming.
