Gold Holds Near Seven-Week High as Traders Weigh Fed Outlook, Mideast Tensions

Summary
Gold prices held steady near a seven-week peak as investors assessed a weaker U.S. labor market's impact on Federal Reserve policy and monitored geopolitical developments in the Middle East.
Gold prices remained firm near a seven-week high on Monday, supported by shifting expectations for the Federal Reserve's interest rate path and persistent geopolitical uncertainty. The precious metal is holding onto gains made last week after disappointing U.S. labor market data fueled bets that the central bank may pause its rate-hiking cycle.
As of early trading, spot gold saw a minor dip of 0.1%, while U.S. gold futures also edged 0.1% lower, according to Investing.com. The slight pullback follows a rally on Friday that pushed prices to their highest level since June 17.
Fed Outlook Softens on Jobs Data
The primary driver for gold's recent strength was last week's U.S. employment report, which showed an unexpected drop in jobs for July and significant downward revisions to the prior month's gains. This weaker-than-expected data led traders to scale back bets on another Fed rate hike in September.
According to market data, futures markets now indicate a less-than-even chance of a rate increase at the Fed's next meeting. Lower interest rates typically benefit non-yielding assets like gold by reducing the opportunity cost of holding bullion. Investors are now keenly awaiting U.S. consumer price data on Wednesday and producer price figures on Thursday for further clues on inflation and the Fed's policy direction.
AdGeopolitical Risks Underpin Prices
Adding to gold's appeal is its status as a safe-haven asset amid geopolitical tensions. Market participants are monitoring developments in the Middle East, including reports that Iran is negotiating new shipping lane arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz.
While such tensions generally support gold, they also contribute to higher oil prices, which can complicate the global inflation outlook. This could potentially limit the Federal Reserve's flexibility to adopt a less restrictive monetary policy. Elsewhere in precious metals, both silver and platinum prices posted modest gains, rising approximately 0.5%.
