Background

General Dynamics Corporation (NYSE: GD) has secured two contracts from the U.S. Department of Defense, with a combined value of $248.9 million, according to a recent announcement. The awards will fund significant modernization work on a U.S. Navy destroyer and upgrades to the Space Force's satellite ground infrastructure.

Naval Vessel Modernization

The larger of the two awards is a $149.6 million firm-fixed-price, incentive-fee contract granted to General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego, California. The contract covers the maintenance, modernization, and repair of the USS Pinckney (DDG 91), an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, during its fiscal year 2026 depot modernization period.

Work will include labor, supervision, equipment, and quality assurance for key upgrades and repairs. The Naval Sea Systems Command awarded the contract on a non-competitive, sole-source basis. The project is scheduled to be completed by September 2028. If all options are exercised, the contract's total value could increase to $149.9 million.

Satellite Ground System Upgrade

General Dynamics Mission Systems, based in Scottsdale, Arizona, received a separate $99.3 million cost-plus-award-fee task order. This contract is for work on the ground infrastructure of the Mobile User Objective System (MUOS), a key military satellite communications network.

The task order involves designing, upgrading, and integrating the MUOS ground segment to support two life-extension satellites. The Space Force's Satellite Communications and Positioning, Navigation, and Timing Program Executive Office awarded the sole-source contract. Work is expected to be finished by September 3, 2028.

Funding and Implications

For investors, these contracts add to General Dynamics' substantial backlog and provide a steady, long-term revenue stream for its naval and mission systems divisions. The awards underscore the company's entrenched position as a critical contractor for the U.S. military's most advanced naval and space assets.

Funding for the contracts is allocated from various fiscal 2026 defense accounts:

  • USS Pinckney: The Navy is using procurement, operations and maintenance, and weapons procurement funds.
  • MUOS System: An initial $23.7 million from research, development, test, and evaluation funds will be obligated at the time of the award.
