Background

Gail India Ltd. will invest ₹6 billion ($63.1 million) to construct a new heating unit at its Ratnagiri liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal, a move designed to unlock the facility's full operational potential. The investment is critical for the gasification process of the super-chilled fuel.

Project Details

The new heating facility is projected to be completed by June 2027, according to R. K. Singhal, the company’s director for business development. Singhal shared the details with reporters at an industry event.

This capital expenditure is aimed at debottlenecking the terminal. In addition to the main heating unit, Gail is also constructing a small captive power plant to generate the necessary heat for the LNG facility, Singhal added.

Strategic Rationale

The investment will allow the Ratnagiri LNG terminal to operate at its full nameplate capacity of 5 million tons per annum. Currently, the terminal is running at approximately 50% capacity because it lacks a dedicated heating unit to convert the imported LNG back into a gaseous state.

Previously, the facility depended on waste heat from a nearby power plant, which is no longer operational. The new unit will provide a self-sufficient and reliable heat source, resolving a long-standing operational constraint and allowing Gail to maximize throughput at the strategic import terminal.
