FTSE 100 Edges Higher as Investors Await Bank of England Rate Decision

Summary
London's blue-chip index posted modest gains as strong corporate earnings reports offset a hawkish hold from the U.S. Federal Reserve, with market focus now turning to the Bank of England's upcoming monetary policy announcement.
London's FTSE 100 index edged higher on Thursday, supported by a series of strong corporate earnings reports, as investors shifted their focus to the Bank of England's imminent interest rate decision.
As of 03:31 ET (07:31 GMT), the benchmark FTSE 100 was up 0.17%, according to Investing.com data. The move came despite overnight losses on Wall Street and rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, with traders weighing a hawkish policy stance from the U.S. Federal Reserve.
Central Bank Divergence in Focus
Investor attention is now squarely on the Bank of England, which is widely expected to hold borrowing costs steady later today. This contrasts with the U.S. Federal Reserve, which on Wednesday maintained its policy rate at a range of 3.50%-3.75% in what analysts described as a "hawkish hold."
The Fed's decision was notable for its dissent, with three regional presidents voting for an immediate 25 basis-point rate hike. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh acknowledged the debate but stated the committee opted for stability by a "large majority," while affirming the central bank "will not hesitate to act" if inflation does not cool sufficiently.
Corporate Earnings Provide Support
AdA raft of positive earnings from major UK-listed companies helped underpin the market's gains. Key updates included:
- Rolls-Royce raised its full-year profit guidance well above market expectations after its first-half operating profit surged 46%, driven by strong performance in its civil aerospace and defence divisions.
- Shell reported that its second-quarter adjusted earnings more than doubled from the previous year, beating forecasts on the back of higher oil and gas prices and strong trading results.
- Lloyds Banking Group announced first-half pretax profit that surpassed expectations and unveiled a new three-year strategic plan.
- BAE Systems and London Stock Exchange Group also upgraded their respective forward-looking guidance after posting results that beat analyst estimates.
Geopolitical Tensions Lift Oil Prices
Broader market sentiment was tempered by escalating tensions in the Middle East, which pushed crude oil prices higher. Reports indicated renewed U.S. air strikes on Iran and the seizure of oil tankers by Iran's IRGC navy in the Strait of Hormuz.
In commodity markets, Brent crude futures rose 0.86% to $88.85 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) gained 1.02% to $85.31 a barrel. The British pound was trading down 0.05% against the U.S. dollar at $1.3340.
