Alphabet Shares Pare Gains on Report of Internal Doubts Over Gemini 4 AI

Summary
Alphabet stock lost momentum Wednesday after a report detailed internal employee skepticism about the real-world performance of its upcoming Gemini 4 AI model. Google has disputed the characterization, calling claims of underperformance inaccurate.
Shares of Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) pared significant gains on Wednesday following a report from Bloomberg that highlighted internal skepticism regarding the real-world capabilities of the company's next-generation artificial intelligence model, Gemini 4.
The stock, which had been up over 2%, reversed course in late trading to close with a modest gain of 0.5% after the report was published.
Report Details Performance Concerns
According to the report, which cited people with direct access to the project, there are concerns among some employees that while Gemini 4 performs well on standard industry benchmarks, it is less effective on practical, real-world tasks. The model reportedly struggles with certain coding assignments.
The article also noted a division among staff. Some employees believe that rival models from competitors like Anthropic and OpenAI are improving at a faster pace, while others feel Gemini 4 has achieved parity with leading AI labs.
Google Disputes Characterization
AdGoogle disputed the report's characterization of the model's performance. The company stated it would be "inaccurate" to suggest Gemini 4 is underperforming in areas like coding, according to Bloomberg.
The tech giant pointed to recent comments from Koray Kavukcuoglu, the head of Google DeepMind, who expressed encouragement about the model's progress. A Google employee familiar with the development also told Bloomberg there is a "large consensus" internally that Gemini 4 is "at the frontier."
Context for Investors
The performance of the Gemini family of models is critical for Alphabet, as the technology underpins nearly all of the company's major products, including Search, Maps, and Gmail, which each serve more than a billion users. Any perceived stumbles in its AI development can impact investor sentiment in the highly competitive AI landscape.
The Bloomberg report also revealed that a planned June release of a different model, dubbed Gemini 3.5 Pro, was previously abandoned, highlighting the development challenges and high stakes involved.
