French Stocks Rise, CAC 40 Gains 0.57% on Sector Strength

Summary
France's CAC 40 index closed higher on Thursday, buoyed by gains in the financial, industrial, and utilities sectors, though market breadth indicated a mixed session for individual stocks.
French equities finished in positive territory on Thursday, with the benchmark CAC 40 index advancing 0.57% by the close of trade in Paris. The broader SBF 120 index also posted a gain, climbing 0.56% for the session.
Key Movers on the CAC 40
The upward move was supported by strong performances in several key sectors, including Financials, Industrials, and Utilities. According to closing data, the session's top performers on the CAC 40 were:
- Eurofins Scientific SE (EPA:EUFI), which surged 2.92% to close at €76.88, a new three-year high.
- Schneider Electric SE (EPA:SCHN), adding 2.76% to end the day at €287.10.
- Stellantis NV (EPA:STLAM), which rose 2.43% to finish at €4.44.
On the other end of the spectrum, EssilorLuxottica SA (EPA:ESLX) was the index's biggest laggard, falling 2.52% to €141.45, a three-year low for the stock. It was followed by Dassault Systemes SE (EPA:DAST), which declined 1.53%, and Thales (EPA:TCFP), which lost 1.08%.
Broader Market and Volatility
AdDespite the headline index gains, market breadth on the Paris Stock Exchange was nearly flat, with 231 stocks advancing compared to 227 declining, while 91 remained unchanged. This suggests that the gains were not universally distributed across the market.
Notably, the CAC 40 VIX, a measure of implied volatility for the index's options, was unchanged at 18.96. While static for the day, this level represents a new 52-week high, indicating that despite the day's gains, underlying investor caution remains elevated.
Commodities and Currencies
In commodities markets, crude oil prices retreated, with the October WTI contract falling 1.59% to $100.80 a barrel. Gold Futures for December delivery saw a modest gain of 0.53% to trade at $4,410.75 per troy ounce.
In currency markets, the EUR/USD pair was largely stable, posting a minimal gain of 0.10% to 1.15. The US Dollar Index Futures edged lower by 0.01% to 99.97.
