Background

French stocks advanced on Monday, with the benchmark CAC 40 index closing up 0.83% as gains in utility and technology shares propelled the market higher. The broader SBF 120 index also finished the session in positive territory, climbing 0.81%.

Sector Strength Lifts Market

The positive sentiment in Paris was supported by broad-based gains across several key industries, with the Utilities, Financials, and Technology sectors leading the advance, according to market data at the close. Market breadth reflected the upward momentum, as 275 stocks on the Paris Stock Exchange rose, while 185 declined and 88 ended the day unchanged.

Notable Stock Movers

Among the blue-chip components of the CAC 40, several companies posted significant gains. The top performers included:

  • Stellantis NV (EPA:STLAM), which surged 3.91%.
  • Hermes International SCA (EPA:HRMS), which added 3.23%.
  • STMicroelectronics NV (EPA:STMPA), which rose 2.62%.

Volatility and Wider Markets

Despite the day's gains, a measure of investor anxiety remained elevated. The CAC 40 VIX, which tracks the implied volatility of the index's options, held steady at 18.96, a level that marks a new 52-week high.

In the wider markets, commodity prices were mixed. Gold futures for December delivery rose approximately 0.78%, while December crude oil contracts fell about 0.98%. In currency markets, the EUR/USD pair was largely flat, while the U.S. Dollar Index Futures saw a modest gain of 0.13%.
