Summary
France's benchmark CAC 40 index closed down 1.64% on Thursday, weighed down by a sharp decline in technology and consumer goods stocks. Semiconductor firm STMicroelectronics was the session's worst performer, plunging over 17%.
French equities fell sharply at Thursday's close, with the benchmark CAC 40 index posting a significant loss as weakness in the technology and consumer goods sectors weighed on investor sentiment.
Paris Markets Close in the Red
The CAC 40 benchmark index finished the session down 1.64%, while the broader SBF 120 index declined 1.50%. The sell-off was widespread, with losses in the Technology, Consumer Goods, and Healthcare sectors leading the market lower, according to data from Investing.com.
Market breadth on the Paris Stock Exchange was decidedly negative. Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones by a margin of 294 to 165, with 78 issues ending the day unchanged.
Tech Sector Leads Declines
The technology sector was a primary source of weakness. Semiconductor manufacturer STMicroelectronics NV (EPA:STMPA) was the worst-performing stock on the CAC 40, plummeting 17.72%. Other notable laggards on the blue-chip index included:
Ad- Eurofins Scientific SE (EPA:EUFI): Down 6.32%
- Luxury group Kering SA (EPA:PRTP): Fell 4.77%
A few companies managed to buck the negative trend. Defense and technology firm Thales (EPA:TCFP) was the top gainer on the CAC 40, rising 5.07%. It was followed by energy major TotalEnergies SE (EPA:TTEF), which added 2.54%.
Volatility and Commodity Markets
Investor anxiety remains elevated, as reflected by the CAC 40 VIX, a key measure of implied volatility. While the index was unchanged for the session at 18.96, it held at a new 52-week high, indicating that market expectations for future price swings are at their highest level in a year.
In the wider markets, energy prices saw a significant rally. Brent crude futures for September delivery rose 6.64% to trade at $100.32 a barrel, while WTI crude gained 6.03%. In contrast, gold futures for August delivery fell 2.42%.
