French Soft Wheat Yield Forecast to Fall 3% Below Five-Year Average

Summary
France, the EU's top grain producer, is projected to see soft wheat yields of 7.0 metric tons per hectare, 3% below the long-term average, according to the Arvalis crop institute, signaling a challenging harvest season shaped by adverse weather.
France's soft wheat yield is forecast to reach 7.0 metric tons per hectare this season, a figure 3% below the five-year average, signaling another challenging harvest for the European Union's largest grain producer. The projection was released by French crop institute Arvalis.
Details of the Harvest Forecast
The latest estimate from Arvalis is slightly more optimistic than the French farm ministry’s mid-July figure of 6.93 tons per hectare, which had placed the total crop at 32.0 million tons. Data from the wheat growers group AGPB shows a difficult season for other cereal crops as well.
Key yield estimates include:
- Durum wheat: 5.1 metric tons per hectare, 4% below average levels.
- Winter barley: 6.3 metric tons per hectare, approaching the average.
- Spring barley: 5.3 metric tons per hectare, falling short of typical production.
Adverse Weather Drives Variations
AdAccording to the AGPB, crop yields have varied widely across different regions and individual farms. The group attributed the inconsistent performance to a series of unfavorable weather events throughout the growing season.
Farmers contended with excess winter rainfall, which was followed by insufficient sunlight in some areas. The crops were later stressed by heatwaves and late-season water shortages, impacting final yields.
Context for Grain Markets
As the EU's leading grain producer and a major global exporter, France's harvest outlook is a key variable for European and international wheat supplies. A smaller-than-average crop could tighten regional balances and lend support to milling wheat futures prices on the Euronext exchange.
